True. After so many years in the jw cult where i made decisions that WEREN'T in my best interests I suppose I sometimes find it hard to identify decisions that are best for me. My gut tells me to keep doing what i'm doing even though the Islamic school would have been a solid opportunity for professional advancement. And while I have no problem with Muslims as all the Muslims I've met have been good people, I much prefer the government schools the students there are given religious freedom. As a teacher I have to respect diversity and be flexible for certain kids and respect their diverse viewpoints and cultures, it is different to having all one culture that is very different to mine. They would be better off with a Muslim teacher if they want to segregate the boys and girls, do prayers and ablutions and observe their traditions.
There are Muslim students in my current government schools of employment and they are free to do their prayers and eat halal. There are Mormons, Catholics and Buddhists too, and as a teacher I respect their views but the majority of students are not religous. Maybe 90% of kids don't care about religion in government schools. 80% probably don't care about it in Christian schools because like i said, Australians are not religious people. I prefer to be in an enviroment of religious freedom.
I feel less anxious now so I know it's the right decision. The last few years have been so topsy-turvy and I've not even been out of the cult two years. It's been only 19 months since my last jw meeting. I've also had many jobs in that time and I've finally gotten into the groove of my current one so I feel it's best to settle into it for now as I'm just not ready for another change.

ive had a complete freak out and decided to stay in my current job...i have anxiety issues thanks to the borg and other things. It's not because of the Islamic thing though that does compound it. I was on the verge of a tearful breakdown ( the sort I used to have all the time at the kingdom hall when i was a devout jw) so my husband said to not to sign the contract and call them up and say something urgent has come up.
I feel like a chicken for not pursuing this opportunity that has landed in my lap but my health will be better if i stay at my current schools in my current teaching role (i work across two state-run, non religious schools in a role which suits me well and the kids are great). -

Thanks guys. My mum is worried i will cop judgement from the non muslim community for teaching in a very unpopular place (although she herself is happy I'm doing it) but after what I've been through with the jws I don't care what people think anymore. Besides, good education is the best weapon against extremism.

thin edge of the wedge my butt!! Religion is a non-event in Australia. It does not have any power like it does in America. Our systems are completely different. You need to understand that here in Australia things are very different. We are much more secular and are far more tightly regulated than America. If the school teaches religion then so what. It is a toothless dog in our country. The significant thing is I'm saying screw jws. Screw them big time.

It's just a job, a seven week contract for crying out loud. I'm not teaching the Quran, just curriculum. If I don't like the school I leave. Easy. Most Muslims here aren't nuts anyway. They just get on with their lives like everyone else. Don't worry, if I find they're teaching extremism to those kids I'm outta there. Something tells me though if they hire non muslim teachers they're not exactly fanatics.

They have to teach evolution. It's law here. We don't have the religious creation lobby like in america. The schools can adapt what they teach but cannot just say they won't teach that thing. All standards and educational outcomes are set by the government. Most people in Australia don't buy creation anyway. Evolution vs creation is not a politicised issue for education like it is in America.

We have religious schools because the religions start their own schools and that's fair enough if they can get people to go to them. And they do, they are quite popular. They are still bound by the laws of the state and federal education departments though, and have the same assessments and standards.

You obviously don't know much about our education system. Even religious schools can't not teach certain things. We have a national curriculum. Christian schools teach the bible and Muslim schools teach the Quran. State-run schools don't teach any holy book. This school is about people having a choice of where to send their kids. As far as I'm concerned, I don't teach Muslims or Mormons or Christians or Jws or Buddhists, I teach students. Students! That the girls wear little hijabs is not my business. A job is a job, a student is a student and the curriculum is the curriculum whatever my religious views.
